Can Fruit Flies Help Us Understand Alzheimer's Disease?
Alzheimer's disease is a complex neurodegenerative disorder that affects memory, cognition, and behavior. I was curious about how scientists investigate such a complicated human disease using simpler model organisms.
During my research internship in Professor Fei Xue's laboratory at Tongji University, I was introduced to the use of Drosophila (fruit flies) in neurological research.
Although fruit flies are very different from humans, their genetic and behavioral characteristics make them useful models for studying biological mechanisms associated with neurological diseases.
This experience helped me understand how researchers use model organisms to explore questions that would be difficult to investigate directly in humans.
